Root Cause

A Root Cause is the originating event in a chain of events that leads to an outcome. For IT events it is usually, but not always, the root cause of a problem that has been discovered on a network or with an application that is causing abnormal operation. As such it is often identified as part of a troubleshooting exercise or post issue investigation in order to prevent similar problems in the future.
