Layer 7 content switching

Layer 7 Content Switching (also known as URL Rewriting) uses information from the application layer of the network stack to augment the more lower level network switching operations. As the Application Layer has information about the target services the data in the packets is intended for, the information can be used by network devices, such as Load Balancers, to route the packets in real time to the server best suited to process them.
