The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a network protocol use to transfer files between computers on a network. It uses standard TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) networking and can be used over most IP based networks. Standard FTP uses clear text authentication and so can pose security risks. Secure variants of FTP, such as FTPS, which uses encryption are available.
