The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) is a USA government standard for specifying computer security in relation to cryptographic levels. It is defined in The FIPS Publication 140-2 titled Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules. There
are 4 levels to the FIPS 140-2 standard. Level 1 is the base level required in order for security at the cryptographic level to be assured.
