DNS

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a system for translating human readable network names into IP Addresses that computers on the Internet, and private networks, use to address each other. DNS is a hierarchical tree structure with the root of the tree comprising top level domains, such as .com, .edu or many other country or business related domain names. The DNS tree branches from each root node and gets more specific for each organisational node until individual servers and services are uniquely identified by a DNS name, which resolves to an IP address.
