The Internet Protocol (IP) is the main communications protocol used on most modern networks, including the public Internet, and private internal networks. IP provides a mechanism for addressing nodes on the network and also specifies the basic data packet structure that is used by other protocols in the IP suite to move data across networks. The IP protocol is connectionless and is often used in conjunction with TCP on IPv4 networks to give TCP/IP. IPv6 is the latest version of the IP Protocol.
