VMworld 2014 – Day 1 Summary

The first day of VMworld 2014 began bright and early with the General Session. This is the annual kick-off session were VMware announces new technology, new product versions and key acquisitions.

The General Session started in true VMware fashion with a spectacle of concrete dropping from the stage to reveal this year’s “NO LIMITS” theme.

VMware then made the announcement about Integrated OpenStack. This is a service that allows companies the ability to construct a ‘platform agnostic’ software-defined datacenter which enables their customers to “repatriate workloads” from “unmanageable and insecure public clouds.”

Pretty cool stuff!

Day 1 also saw VMware release a range of new hybrid cloud service capabilities and several third-party mobile application services. These include vCloud Air services for on-demand access to vCloud Air and also VMware vCloud Air Object Storage, which is aimed at providing users with scalable storage options for unstructured data at a price per volume package.

Another VMware announcement was a collaboration with Docker, Google and Pivotal. This new partnership will deliver enterprises the ability to run and manage container-based applications on VMware platforms.

Other announcements included a partnership with Dell on NSX and converged infrastructure products and also a partnership with HP on Helion OpenStack to support enterprise-class VMware virtualization technologies.

After the general session ended, the Solutions Exchange opened and attendees were able to browse all the new technologies in the Exhibit Hall.
